pH and Salinity

Plants and microorganisms are quite sensitive to the acidity or alkalinity of surrounding soil. Conditions are optimized when pH falls between 5.5 and 7.0. This is because when pH values drop below 5.5, nutrients leach much faster from the soil, meaning that there are fewer fuel sources for healthy growth and activity.

Overly salty soil also creates problems for both plants and growers. Although the soil may appear relatively moist, crops will exhibit signs of drought and growth will slow. The excess water is deceptive because plants are unable to access it due to its high salt content. Humics boost soil health by naturally neutralizing pH and efficiently flushing salts out of the root zone.

Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC)

Humics promote attractive growing conditions. CEC is a measure of how well soil interacts with positively charged ions in nutrients, water, fertilizers and other amending products. Thanks to a powerful negative charge, humics are able to attract, store and release key nutrients like calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, magnesium and iron. Instead of being washed away, these nutrients are retained in the soil so plants can take full advantage.

Leaching

Humic acids have a lot of receptor sites that naturally attract nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Instead of being lost in the soil, nutrients are collected and released.

Chelation

Humic and fulvic acids are able to hold on to mineral ions so that they do not react prematurely and become unavailable to the plant. It means that instead of being wasted, the minerals can be used when they are needed most. Fulvic acid offers added benefits as it can easily travel through cell membranes to deliver minerals on target.

Organic Matter

When it comes to organic matter, a little goes a long way. Although it typically is just 5% of the soils composition, organic matter plays a key role in almost everything related to soil health including moisture availability, temperature control, aeration, microorganism activity, mineral decomposition, stabilizing pH and buffering. In agriculture, horticulture and turf applications, humics are used as a soil enhancer in conjunction with chemical fertilizers. While the use of humics does not mean growers can forgo fertilizers altogether, it does help to decrease the total volume of fertilizers required for healthy crops.

Although there are coal deposits all over the world, the superior quality of the Humalite found in Alberta is widely recognized. To understand why, one must appreciate the two types of coal being compared – sub-bitumous versus Lignite.

Sub-bitumous coal, or Humalite, is Alberta’s signature product. It is a distinct oxidized coal that contains a much higher percentage of both humic and fulvic compounds than Lignite.

Lignite, which is also known as Leonardite, comes from salt-water deposits whereas Humalite is the product of Alberta’s freshwater bogs and vegetation. As a result, Humalite has fewer heavy metals and less ash. Humalite is also a much softer coal than Lignite, which means that it can break down faster and integrate more effectively back into the soil to produce benefits.
